Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa

Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa

Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa is a popular sweet from the small town of Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu which is served for wedding as a part of breakfast.

My family loves all things Halwa, and this is yet another fantastic recipe to add to your Halwa list!

For some reason, I always thought that making Halwa was a difficult process, but it turned out rather easy. Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa can be make it in your kitchen with only a few ingredients and a little know-how. Though the recipe is quite simple, I figure it’s easier for you to just see what everything is supposed to look like as you are working your way through the directions in the recipe below. Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa is a rich flavor in combination of Moong dal, sugar, and ghee…

I have a bite-sized video to show you how to make this recipe.

Ingredients

  • Moong dal – 1 cup
  • Wheat flour – ¼ cup
  • Sugar – 2 cups
  • Cashews – 1 Tbsp
  • Ghee – 1 cup
  • Red Food color (optional) – ⅛ tsp
  • Orange food color (optional) – ⅛ tsp

Instructions

  1. Take 1 cup of Moong dal in a bowl.
  2. Add enough water to soak and keep it aside for 2 hours.
  3. Transfer the moong dal into a pressure cooker.
  4. Add enough water to cook.
  5. Pressure cook it for 5 whistles or until it turns mushy.
  6. Mash the moong dal well.
  7. Add sugar while the mashed dal is still hot enough; so that the sugar will melt and mix well easily.
  8. Mix it well till it gets mixed.
  9. At this stage, you can stop mixing (here you can see some lumps which is so hard to mix).
  10. If needed, you can blend it in a blender once it cools down (blend it only after it cools down or else your kitchen will turn into a mess 😂).
  11. Make sure the consistency of the dal is like a batter (which makes the process easier).
  12. Heat a pan and add ¼ cup of ghee.
  13. Add wheat flour.
  14. Mix it till there are no more lumps.
  15. Add cashews.
  16. Mix it well till it starts to give a sizzling sound.
  17. Add the blended Moong dal. After this stage, bring the flame to medium-low.
  18. Mix it well.
  19. Add cardamom powder and mix it well.
  20. Add red food color and mix it well. This step is optional.
  21. I also added orange food color (as I felt the red food color was not enough to boost the halwa).
  22. Add the rest of the ghee little by little.
  23. Mix it well till it gets well coated to the moong dal.
  24. Mix it well till it reaches the Halwa consistency.

Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa is ready to Enjoy!

Notes

  1. Make sure the Moong dal gets mashed well or else the Halwa won’t come out smooth.
  2. Take special care that the Moong dal & wheat flour don’t get burnt and will ruin the taste.
  3. If you want the Halwa to ooze the ghee, you can add upto 1¼ cup of ghee instead of 1 cup.
  4. You can also make this Halwa without the wheat flour by only using the Moong dal.
  5. You can add any food color you like or you can just skip adding the food color. The choice is yours.
  6. Serve it cold or hot (by warming it up in a microwave).
