Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa is a popular sweet from the small town of Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu which is served for wedding as a part of breakfast.
My family loves all things Halwa, and this is yet another fantastic recipe to add to your Halwa list!
For some reason, I always thought that making Halwa was a difficult process, but it turned out rather easy. Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa can be make it in your kitchen with only a few ingredients and a little know-how. Though the recipe is quite simple, I figure it’s easier for you to just see what everything is supposed to look like as you are working your way through the directions in the recipe below. Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa is a rich flavor in combination of Moong dal, sugar, and ghee…

I have a bite-sized video to show you how to make this recipe.
Ingredients
- Moong dal – 1 cup
- Wheat flour – ¼ cup
- Sugar – 2 cups
- Cashews – 1 Tbsp
- Ghee – 1 cup
- Red Food color (optional) – ⅛ tsp
- Orange food color (optional) – ⅛ tsp
Instructions
- Take 1 cup of Moong dal in a bowl.
- Add enough water to soak and keep it aside for 2 hours.
- Transfer the moong dal into a pressure cooker.
- Add enough water to cook.
- Pressure cook it for 5 whistles or until it turns mushy.
- Mash the moong dal well.
- Add sugar while the mashed dal is still hot enough; so that the sugar will melt and mix well easily.
- Mix it well till it gets mixed.
- At this stage, you can stop mixing (here you can see some lumps which is so hard to mix).
- If needed, you can blend it in a blender once it cools down (blend it only after it cools down or else your kitchen will turn into a mess 😂).
- Make sure the consistency of the dal is like a batter (which makes the process easier).
- Heat a pan and add ¼ cup of ghee.
- Add wheat flour.
- Mix it till there are no more lumps.
- Add cashews.
- Mix it well till it starts to give a sizzling sound.
- Add the blended Moong dal. After this stage, bring the flame to medium-low.
- Mix it well.
- Add cardamom powder and mix it well.
- Add red food color and mix it well. This step is optional.
- I also added orange food color (as I felt the red food color was not enough to boost the halwa).
- Add the rest of the ghee little by little.
- Mix it well till it gets well coated to the moong dal.
- Mix it well till it reaches the Halwa consistency.
Ashoka Halwa / Thiruvaiyaru Style Asoka Halwa is ready to Enjoy!
Notes
- Make sure the Moong dal gets mashed well or else the Halwa won’t come out smooth.
- Take special care that the Moong dal & wheat flour don’t get burnt and will ruin the taste.
- If you want the Halwa to ooze the ghee, you can add upto 1¼ cup of ghee instead of 1 cup.
- You can also make this Halwa without the wheat flour by only using the Moong dal.
- You can add any food color you like or you can just skip adding the food color. The choice is yours.
- Serve it cold or hot (by warming it up in a microwave).
